I really think that the song Everyday is Exactly The Same" really relates to the 1984 the best. In the beginning, it says' I believe I can see the future, cause I repeat the same routine. I think I used to have a purpose, and then again that might have been a dream", just like in the the book. Winston remembers the past, but he doesn't believe that it was true because reality now for him is more believable and the past has been changed so many times.
"I just do what I’ve been told; I really don’t want them to come around" also can be realted to the novel because the of how Winston doesn't want to get caught by the Thought Police and get vaporized, because of doing something suspicious.
Juast by reading and listening to the first verse, I was able to automatically hear the similarities between the song and the novel.
Good choice for this week :)

g0rGeOuSgUrL6,
I agree to a certain extent what you said in your post. This world is becoming very lazy as well as evil. Someone has to be a leader in their own view. These chips are the start of the world under one government. Soon, religion will be prohibited. I feel that it is getting very ridiculous how people these days seem to think. It will continue to become more ridiculous until the world ends. Sort of like a backwards evolution.

ctg876:
Actually, as freaked out as I am about strangers seeing me all the time, I definately see your logic.
All the surveillance would definately be a form of protection for everyone. I guess it really just comes down to how much is too much. There are pro's as well as cons with the whole situation. I see that the security would want to keep the streets safe. Ehhh, but there's some information that maybe I would feel a little weird about random people knowing about..., unless I've done something to deserve attention for. The more they know, the more power they have. And, they seem to be wanting to know more and more.

To an extent, I can understand the use of surveillance cameras. It really does reduce crime. It creates a 1984 effect in that people could pull up those tapes at any time. Just the cameras being there kind of makes people think twice about doing something crazy. Only if someone has a criminal record should he or she have information compiled in computers and security systems. I think that everyone should be automatically trusted unless they do something that should make them untrustworthy to the public.
Face detectors should only be used if the security is looking for a specific person (like a criminal on the loose).
There is all kinds of information that the government could easily get a hold of, but that doesn't mean that they SHOULD get it and keep it. It's a perfect example of abusing power. They don't have any business having that information. At least, they should ask people what they are allowed to know and what is too personal to keep on file.
What's freaky is that this is not JUST China! Apparently, it's getting around the entire world! I mean, maybe not as much as China at this point, but there is a hint of it everywhere.
Like I said, I understand trying to reduce crime.
But, only the criminals should be nervous...not everyone.

i completely agree with itsme!5. i thinl it is very wrong to have everything you do tracked. everyone has a right to their privacy and this defenietly bursts that bubble! criminals will just find a way to block the tracker

I think that China is going a little overboard on this one. I mean, it's kind of rediculous for people to have to have computer chips with all of their personal information on it. I think this is very wrong because basically anyone that knows how to retrieve information like this thats like an actual criminal could really cause some damage. I think that people also need their own privacy too. I think that their government is losing focus on what the real problem is, and so they just want everyones personal info. for no apparrent reason. I think this is very wrong and they need to figure something else out that is better for catching the real criminals!

i listened to the first song. i thought it went along very well with 1984. it is talking about how you (winston for example) may know inside that something isn't right (the society in 1984 for example), but the real question is do you have the power in yourself to fight back? or will you just keep going on with doing what isn't right just because you don't have the guts to try to stand up for what's right? i actually enjoyed the song :)

p.s.-
ONLY 3 WEEKS TILL BABY RILEY'S HERE! :)
sorry, just wanted to share my excitement..

I believe that China's surveillance is fine. I mean, if it is on subways and on the streets and stuff, yeah, that's okay. If it was in private places like their homes, then I would be against it. But seriously. Private is where you do the things you wouldn't want other people to know about or see. If you are in public, then you shouldn't be doing those things. And if you aren't doing anything wrong in public, then you shouldn't care about being on camera. By going out in public, whether in a place like the U.S. or China, you are essentially saying that you don't mind people seeing what you are doing. If you are so worried about what people will see you doing, don't do it!

i feel that the goverment is installing these security devices to protect the people of its country. the devices aren't necesarily used for tracking or stocking the normal common people, it is created and used for tracking down criminals. which will prevent crime and make the cities safer. lots of times people in large cities get raped or robben in city alley ways by people in black and those people can never be found and charged. but with higher security this can be solved. i mean people can have all the privacy they want, but yet they complain about high crime rates. the government tries to do something about it and the people complain that they have no privacy and the government is trying to control them. i dont know, and dont really care, but thats just the way it is i guess.....
