Song of the Week: From Me Again

I was really hoping some of you would step up and send me something for this week’s song of the week, but, alas, no one did. It would be especially nice if some of you who complain about not liking any of the songs would actually do something about it and try it yourself. I’m just sayin’. It would be great to have a student submission for next week if anyone has any ideas. Some of you have given me ideas, but I need you to actually follow through and write an introduction for it before I can use it. But for this week it looks like you are stuck with me and my pick again.

These last few weeks, I’ve been trying to pick songs that had a little more depth to them to make the discussion a little better. You did a great job with last week’s song. A few of you are still missing the point of the assignment. This is not meant to be purely entertainment. While I hope you do get enjoyment out of it, my main goal is to get you writing about music as poetry. By the time we actually get to the poetry unit in our book, you should be pros (PUN!). I am glad that some of you are being exposed to some different styles of music and are enjoying it. You are moving our of your comfort zone and being open minded. A handful of you remain stuck in your ways and unwilling to open your mind to anything new or different. To each his own. Prepare for a hard time when you get to college though if you are unwilling to be exposed to new styles and ideas. OK, end of this week’s soapbox. Anyway, I’ve picked another song this week that I think will generate some good discussion. This one is fairly new and many of you should know it.

This week’s song is “Funny the Way It Is” by Dave Matthews Band. It is from their newest album (I believe it came out in August). I’ve always enjoyed DMB. I’ve never been a hardcore, see them every time they come in concert, worship everything they do fan, but I’ve always liked them. I really enjoy the new album, however. This song was the first one released on the radio from that album. It’s a good song, and it should be pretty easy to discuss. Enjoy.

Listen here:
03 Funny The Way It Is 1

“Funny the Way It Is”
Dave Matthews Band

Lying in the park on a beautiful day
Sunshine in the grass, and the children play
Siren’s passing, fire engine red
Someone’s house is burning down on a day like this

The evening comes and we’re hanging out
On the front step and a car rolls by with the windows rolled down
And that war song is playing, “why can’t we be friends?”
Someone is screaming and crying in the apartment upstairs

Funny the way it is, if you think about it
Somebody’s going hungry and someone else is eating out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
Somebody’s heart is broken and it becomes your favorite song

The way your mouth feels in your lovers kiss
Like a pretty bird on a breeze or water to a fish
A bomb blast brings a building crashing to the floor
You hear the laughter while the children play war

Funny the way it is, if you think about it
One kid walks 10 miles to school, another’s dropping out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
On a soldier’s last breath his baby’s being born

Standing on a bridge, watch the water passing under me
It must’ve been much harder when there was no bridge just water
Now the world is small, remember how it used to be
With mountains and oceans and winters and rivers and stars

Watch the sky, the jet planes, so far out of my reach
Is there someone up there looking down on me?
Boy chase a bird, so close but every time
He’ll never catch her, but he can’t stop trying

Funny the way it is, if you think about it
One kid walks 10 miles to school, another’s dropping out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
On a soldier’s last breath his baby’s being born
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
Somebody’s broken heart becomes your favorite song
Funny the way it is, if you think about it
A kid walks 10 miles to school, another’s dropping out

Standing on a bridge, watch the water passing under me
It must’ve been much harder when there was no bridge just water
Now the world is small, remember how it used to be
With mountains and oceans and winters and rivers and stars

Wow! that is so funny that this weeks song is
“Funny the way it is”! i love this song. My favorite part is when he says “Funny the way it is sombodys going hungry and someone else is eating out”. Along with all the other lines it shows just how life works. You can live in a huge million dollar house but just a couple bolcks away is a family scrownging up enough dollars to eat a piece of bread. This song really makes me think about others, not just myself. Dont be so selfish in life because there is always someone who has it worse than you!

Thanks for posting this! Its just the song i needed! :)

This song was amazing. He is talking about how there is always something going on in the world that is good in someones eyes and bad in another at the same time. It is just funny the way it is, and is not right or wrong. Great song!!!!!!

I actually sent a request but my email has issues with sending to @scsk12.org, so it looks like I won’t be putting any songs up.

I like the use of IRONY in this song. Situational irony mostly.

The first verse is like the example that @tchrman gave us in class about it being a lovely day. It’s a great day, but someone’s house is burning down. Now that I’m typing this, I realize that this song doesn’t need much explaining. So what to talk aboutttt??? I do love Dave Matthews. I find it hard not to.

Well I do enjoy the use of irony in this song. Like how the couple are fighting while the car is playing “Why can’t we be friends?”

I really like the war parts. How children laugh while they play war, while soldiers are fighting hard. It reminds me of Serj Tankian’s “Empty Walls” video.

I’m done. I don’t like explaining everything. I’m not in the mood I guesssss. Plus it’s self explanitory. Just think irony and you’ll get it

Even though it would have been fun to blog about another student- picked song, Mr. Hudson, you chose wonderfully! I absolutely love this song because of the message it gives to the listener. To me, this song has three meanings: Irony is everywhere, life is what you make it, and one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I love this song and all three of it’s meanings!! :)

Hold on one second while I wipe the vomit off my shirt…

Oh gosh listening to this song is worse than getting stabbed. At the beginning it had a bit of a Maroon 5 feel that was almost diggable….and then it burned right along with every other song in Dave Mathhew’s Band history. I see how the lyrics in this song coorelate with our lesson on irony. He is saying that because something is going well for us, someone else has to pay the price for our happiness. Also, I heard several other songs in the song, I can’t name them, but there were riffs and rhythyms that sounded very familiar. Well anyways, I have to go and violently bang my head against my wall to try and dislodge this so called “music” I have been subjected unwillingly to.

w o w wow! i loved these lyrics! they are so profound! they really got me thinking.. they talk of how one really bad thing for one person is a great happy thing for another. it also refers to the ironic way that one person may have something or do something that seems unimportant but to another person it is like some great fantastic thing. for instance, “somebody’s going hungry, while another is eating out”. i think this song was meant to make people stop and think about what they have and how much they take for granted. good pick!

Wow, ur right, tchrman! This is a great song for discussion. :P
It really touched me! For me, the best part was “Somebody’s heart is broken and it becomes your favorite song”. It almost gave me chills(xD but not quite) haha (..?)
Ha, It’s so true, though! The whole song is. We take for granted all of the things we have. There are people out there who work hard to go to school, while people who can easily go are just lazy or scared and just drop out! While people are having the time of their lives, they don’t think about the ones who are starving to death or suffering. We think about life the way it is now, but not so much about how it got to be this way.
It makes me kind of realize how I can just get caught up in my life and forget about the world I’m living in. And, it made meh think about how I could be having the worst say of my life, and there are billions of people wouldn’t know and or care.
It’s not right or wrong. Just funny.

I’ve always liked this band, never really gotten to into their stuff but always liked them. the song is saying how things differ with different people. how some people are eating out, while others are begging for a few bucks to get something to eat. very good point but not overly depressing.

    GirlsNotGrey,
Actually, what is in the song is technically not irony. Much like the old Alanis Morissette song “Ironic”, it contains coincidences not irony.

If you can’t get the e-mail to work, just submit your idea as a post on here. Include a note at the top about what it is so I don’t approve it to show up on the discussion page.

Wow, I really love this song. I personally like Dave Matthews songs and I have never heard this song before. What I like greatly about this song is that it is so true. How one person is going hungry and another person is eating out or how a kid is willing 10 miles to go to school while another kid is dropping out. It truly is funny the way things are. You definitly need to put more Dave Matthew songs out. If you dont like the lyrics that much the beats are usually pretty cool.

It turly ironic how life can turn out so well for someone two seats down from you when you could be just trying to survive another day. This song really made me think about how society has changed and how self centered people can be now. He took life and made a great song from its ups and downs.

There are some people out in this world that are hungry and poor, and then there are people who have so much money, they just spend it all. It’s funny that some people cherish family and school and others dont care. I loved the part where is said, “On a soldier’s last breath his baby’s being born”. I like to think about how when one person dies another person is born. This song gave me a lot to think about.

And there are people who are lazy and just go out to eat when there is someone out there who would coook for hours if there was only something to cook. The song , to me, is explaining how the world around us is being corrupted and how people are taking it so lightly. The song is trying to say how if we would just stop and look around at what’s really going on, we might be able to improve the world around us.

I’m actually a fan of Dave Matthews Band, but haven’t kept up with them in the past year or two, therefore, this was the first I’d heard of this song. It is AMAZING, i love it! It’s very approriate for this month because it’s sharing how thankful we should be for being raised correctly, and what we are blessed with in our everyday life. We take for granted little things that some people in this world are not fortunate enough to have like knowing the bus will pick us up in the morning for school, knowing that there will be enough food in the cafeteria at school for every student, knowing that we have a house to go home to every afternoon and evening that is cooled/heated. The lyrics in this song can really set one’s mind to be more thankful for everything and perhaps let them realize that we, as youth, can make a difference in the world.

This is probably the best song we’ve had so far; however, it’s sorta depressing. If you look past the upbeat tempo, and raspy-is voice, you can see the intense, deep lyrics being sung. I really like it. it puts me in a reflective mood. Do people stop and think about this? Those lyrics really got to me. My favorite:

“Somebody’s broken heart becomes your favorite song”

That’s so true and sad. Somebody is always on the other end suffering, and I think the problem with that is that we don’t stop to think about that other person.

I understand the meaning, too =) It’s saying that it’s funny, of course not in a literal sense, how for one person…something can go right, but for someone else it goes totally wrong. Everything could be going great, and then all things turn around. There’s hurt, sadness, happiness, and a little bit of a relaxed feeling in this song. The beginning is relaxed and happy, but middle and end show sadness and hurt. He’s remembering how it used to be in the end, too. Personally, I liked the song for the energy and the lyrics. I think that it is talking about how different people are in the world. You could have somebody that is really rich nand owns a really expensive house, and then a couple of blocks away you could have someone that doesnt even have enough money for a house or even their next meal to eat. This also makes me realize how blessed we are sometimes that we can actually go to school and have houses and food and water to drink. It makes me stop and think that I could really try and do something to help all the needy people in the world. It makes me sad that everyone cannot be as privilaged as most of us, and we don’t need to take life for granted because you never know when even your lat day will be!!

I don’t go and google search everyone’s post because I trust that you guys have enough integrity to do your own work. However, this week, a couple of you proved me wrong. I usually copy and paste the lyrics of the song from one of the numerous lyric sites all over the web. Some of these happen to have user comments sharing feelings and interpretations of the song. As I was copying the lyrics this week, I happened to read the first post from a user on the site. I read through it because I thought their interpretation was interesting. That’s why I was able to recognize it when not one but TWO different students posted the same comment WORD FOR WORD as their post. Those two students have been given zeroes for the week. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Bottom line, do your own work. Even if you don’t feel your work is as good as someone elses, that is ok. I want to see what YOU can do. The whole purpose of this is for you to practice interpreting poetry and making meanings for yourself. If you copy someone else’s ideas, you are learning nothing. So, please, DO YOUR OWN WORK!

It is one of those songs you can see and not understand, but once you think about it, it gets mind blowing. My favorite line was the one about a soldier dying while his baby is being born. This is because this happens all the time, and most do not think of that.

Well i actually thought that this band was pretty good. I’ve always heard a lot about the Dave Mathews band but i never actually heard their music. I thought the lyrics were decent and th music was pretty catchy. I disagree that he has a whinny voice at least in this song i thought his voice was just fine. and i like the variety of the different songs.

This song could be a reality check to someone!
It just makes you stop and realize how many different things are going on in the world at one time, good and bad. It shows the people who think that the world is just one big happy place, that it could be just the opposite to others. Like for instance, you could be having the time of your life to were you think that nothing could ever go wrong, while someone else could be depressed and in sorrow. Oh, and by the way…GOOD SONG CHOICE MR.H!

I agree with you on your comment. In my opinion there’s always someone whose life is going great. At the same time there could be a person who is having the worst time . Life is just that way. Life is not right or wrong it just is.

    hi5,
I loved the way you reasoned your likes of the song. Irony does seem to play a big, interesting role as it states a beautiful day sits upon a burning house. Other lines in this song form situational irony, too. Also, you can take this song whatever way you want, but when you encounter a situation similar to one mentioned in the song, you have to make life how you want it to be. Not to mention, thankfulness plays a key role, because for what you think is useless junk could be a fortune of another and be greatly used in someone else’s hands.

I agree with what you said about this song! Dave Matthews Band is amazing! I agree with how you said that he’s talking about the different ways people can interpret the same thing. And yes, it is an amazing song! Great pick, tchrman!

I really liked the song by Dave Matthews Band. The guitar part was really wicked. The beginning was nice, I liked the contrast at the beginning, and how it sunk in to the chorus. Overall, I really liked the song, partially because I like Dave Matthews Band, and partially because I love rock music. So the song was great.

You are so right! I first heard this song over the summer at the youth event. It made me stop and think about everyone else other than myself. Its like on one floor of a hospital, a family is joyous because they have a new edition to their family, but on the floor above them another family is weeping over their loss.

i thought it was like that too. the first time i listened to it. but then i relized i didnt even really hear the song. i kinda got cought up watching the cool designs my music player shows. so i listened to it again and it was really boring at first but i loved loved loved the chorus. and the lyrics are amazing! its talking about how life is unfair and thats just the way it is. but it did get old after a while because it was sooo long. i mean really 4 minuets. so it coulda been shorter but the lyrics were awesome!

The song actually sounds quite cheerfull when you listen to it. However, when reading the lyrics you get the real meaning. Kind of like that Flobots song from last week. I have to agree with blink1826. Dave Matthews Band does kind of suck. Matchbox Twenty would be a good song of the week band!!:):)

Wow!This song was pretty amazing. Those lyrics were deep, especially on a soldier’s last breath his baby’s being born. I especially liked the use of irony.

i agree with corgilover5. This song was full of irony. Which seems to be matching what we”ve been doing in class recently. I think that some of the things they mentioned in the song really makes you want to take a second and think… is that right for that to happen? who knows, maybe someone would justify that its just life. either way great song, really enjoyed it.

i completely agree with irockstar6. i really agree with the part when they say it makes you stop and realize how many different things are going on in the world at one time, good and bad. it really made me think, wow this is so true. we are sitting here complaining about not having eaten food since breakfast at lunch time, and people in like africa or something having eaten in like a week. we are just really spoiled here.

Oh i got it now. Wow there is alot of irony inthis song. I agree with 0110011101_101_6. The lyrics have alot of meaning to them but the sng itself is pretty much boring. Hope this is just a bad track/day he was havin wen he made dis song. It really does make you think abt others alittle bit

this week’s song is not bad. its lesson is one that everyone should learn: that you are blessed with the things you have. People take too many everyday things for granted, such as eating, going to school, and just having a place to sleep at night. very deep song.

I liked this song of the week. Dave Mathews Band has always been good and ive listened to their music. This song kinda hits you deep. It tells you that life isnt fair and that you cant do anything about it. If your living a luxurious life dont forget that many are living a horrible life..and when you think things cant get anyworse there is always someone who is going through things a million times worse. So dont be selfish and think about others even when your doing great

Like everyone has said, this song relates to how when something good goes on in life, something bad is also happening somewhere else. I really don’t like Dave Mathews Band & I find it easier to understand certain songs by reading the lyrics rather than listening to it all, so I did. I love how he showed the positive side to one thing, then contrasted it with something negative. It honestly makes you think about certain things. For an example, when you’re out just spending your money on nothing, there are poor people in the world trying to find a way to try to stay alive each and every day. Just be greatful for what you have in life because there are others that are suffering.
