Song of the Week: Let Them Eat Cake!

Well, I was hoping to get a student-volunteered post for this week since those have been so popular, but, alas, none of you stepped up. If you would like to do the song of the week post for next week, shoot me an e-mail with the name of the song, the lyrics, and the reason you would like to do this song. If I choose it, be prepared to write the introduction to it and get it to me by Sunday night. Since no one volunteered, you’re stuck with my pick this week.

I decided to dig deep into the Hudson library of music for this week’s pick. I chose a band and song that was one of my favorites when I was around your age–Cake’s “The Distance”. The band is still around and working on a new CD, but it still makes me feel old that this song was popular so long ago.

I’ve always been a big fan of Cake (the band and the food!), and I’ve seen them in concert a couple of times. This was the very first song I heard by them, and it comes from their second album Fashion Nugget. When I was in college, a friend got me hooked on their first album (which remains my overall favorite), and I have remained a fan ever since. What I like so much about them is their unique sound. Much of this uniqueness comes from their use of distorted guitar sounds. In addition, they frequently use several instruments not commonly used in alternative music–the Moog, the trumpet (which is an instrument I hold near to my heart because I am a trumpeter–although not a very good one anymore), and–my personal favorite–the VIBRASLAP! (If you don’t know what a Vibraslap is, click here)

Another thing I admire about them is that they are very conservation-conscious. One thing they’ve done is made their studio where they record their albums completely solar-energy operated. Some of you expressed last week that knowing a little about the band helped you with understanding the song, so if you would like to read more about Cake, here’s a link you can use.
Cake Bio

So, hope you enjoy the song. It should be easy to discuss. It’s a great example of metaphor. If you would like to hear more, I can point you in the right direction.

Listen:
02 The Distance

“The Distance”
Cake
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags go up.
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup.
They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank.
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns.
Their prowess is potent and secretly stearn.
As they speed through the finish, the flags go down.
The fans get up and they get out of town.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup.
But hes driving and striving and hugging the turns.
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.

Hes going the distance.
Hes going for speed.
Shes all alone
In her time of need.
Because hes racing and pacing and plotting the course,
Hes fighting and biting and riding on his horse,
Hes going the distance.

No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine,
Hes haunted by something he cannot define.
Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse,
Assail him, impale him with monster-truck force.
In his mind, hes still driving, still making the grade.
Shes hoping in time that her memories will fade.
Cause hes racing and pacing and plotting the course,
Hes fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup.
But hes striving and driving and hugging the turns.
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.

Cause hes going the distance.
Hes going for speed.
Shes all alone
In her time of need.
Because hes racing and pacing and plotting the course,
Hes fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
Hes racing and pacing and plotting the course,
Hes fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
Hes going the distance.
Hes going for speed.
Hes going the distance.

Haha! Cake is awesome and I realy like this song. Ive heard it before and some of their others too. I think that this song is about a guy that is regreting something that happened to someone he loved and he doesnt know what to do, so he is contimplating it as he drives.

Hm. I can’t help but feeling like I’ve heard this song before..

    ANYWAYSSSS;

The song was okay. I liked the way they did it, but it kinda got boring. It was pretty much just the same thing over and over. If there was a part where it changed and did something different, especially in the guitar lines, it would have made the song a lot better. I think they should have thrown in a really flashy or catchy guitar riff in there. But other than the constant repitition, the song was really cool, and really unique. I like music like that. Keep it coming, tchrman!

well this was a pretty interesting pick for the week. This song, i think, means something like this guy trying his best to be the best. Someone already took the trophy a long time but he is still goin to continue and try. One thing i do not understand is the woman who is mentioned a few times. Mabye she is his wife and she misses him because he is always on the race track. im not sure!

I listened to this song three times before I even attempted to make a comment. The Flobots so ripped off this style from these guys to the point where it is almost unbelievably. I’ve heard it before, but it hasn’t been for years. This is one of the coolest sounding things I have heard in a long long time. I think the song is about a guy striving to be the best and beat everyone around him, but even though he is fighting as hard as possible he is still somehow unsuccesful. He is leaving all that he ever knew behind because of his addiction to maybe becoming victorious.

I love Cake, and white boy raps! My friend, by the initials MJW, got me into Cake last year. But bands like this define the 90s in my opinion. They liked o mix the genres of rock and rap together, instead of make them polar opposites.

But it could mean that a man strives his best to become the greatest racer around. But he neglects the loved one when she needs him. I can’t tell if he’s a race car driver or a jockey, but he is training as hard as he can. He races for the loved one, but isn’t spending time with her. Just like in those cliche sports movies when the coach and his wife get divorced because of it

    @camojoe

I wouldn’t say that the Flobots ripped them off because the Flobots are super political, which adds a new style. “Handlebars”(i’m using this song because it is their biggest hit) is one of the most political songs I’ve ever heard. I don’t really know if this song has anything political at all

I love this song!!!!! The music is so cool and the meaning is too. I think it means that he was in love for this girl and she left him. Now, he is trying really hard and going “The Distance” to get his girl back. He keeps trying even though he knows there is no hope for him to get her back. This is a really awesome song! I love it!

this is really cool! I think I’ve heard it before– but maybe I’m just crazy.

To me, this song really reminds me of fighting for good grades– especially the lines “They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank, Fuel burning fast on an empty tank.” Maybe I’m wrong, but it sounds a lot like how many people worry about nothing but class rank, ignoring even their friends– “Cause hes going the distance. He’s going for speed. She’s all alone In her time of need.” Yeah. But again, I could be crazy. (Cake is an awesome name for a band. I don’t really like the food, but the music’s good).

    Camojoe,
I had never heard Flobots before (I had heard OF them though), so I downloaded “Handlebars” which seemed to be their most popular song. I could hear some similarities (the trumpet, etc). However, most Cake songs don’t sound like “The Distance”, so I don’t really think they ripped them off. I did dig what I heard of the Flobots though and ended up buying the CD, so thanks for introducing me to it!

Dude!! This song is really cool! What year was it released? I really like the kind of rapmetal feel it has. Kinda like RHCP. Not really, but kinda. The lyrics are really driving, they kinda pumped me up. I would love to listen to this song while taking a brisk jog through the Dominican Republic. I might even try to cover this song with my band.
    thanks for the awesomeness, tchrman!

so when i just read the lyrics i really liked it…the lyrics at first were confusing cause i got that even though he wasn’t number one…he was striving to it…something we should definitely do more of instead of just quitting. but then the girl came in. it got confusing there. maybe if you want to take it as a metaphor he is striving to be the best he can for her but it just isn’t working and she is lonely. or he wants to be number one for her but leaving her alone in the process.

when i listened to the song i didn’t dig it so much. maybe it is the white boy rap…i was really looking forward to some good vocals combined with these awesome instrumentals but then he just talked the whole song…quite a let down…maybe i should look up some of their other music if it isn’t alll like this.

Niice. Ok I can see the similarity between flobots and cake. Im pretty sure ive heard of cake before, or at least seen an album cover. So anywaay, the song was… good. I mean, it wasn’t exactly the type of alternative i listen to, but it was ok. Kind of like an ancestor of handlebars. It seems like the song has to do with a guy who is striving towards some goal but cannot reach it and things dont seem to improve much in the process, much like life. Ha i guess there is some metaphor in there! :)

I really liked this song. i had to read the lyrics a couple to find out what he is trying to say but the i loved the beat. I think what he is trying to say is that he has done something he regrets doing and trying to get his life back on track but cant seem to get their yet. the part about the woman i think is his way of saying it had to do with true love and she cant stand him anymore. But it was a hard song to try to find the meaning of. Liked the begining part on describing the race :)

    cry me a river
    cry me a river ohh
    cry me a river
that is the whole song! its so annoying!! however i do still like the music to this song and the meaning! its a good song just needs more variety. cant wiat to hear the next one :)

Nice song! I think it means that this guy is going to do whatever it takes and he wants nobody in his way. He is living a selfish, fast life that will lead to destruction. She (who could be a girlfriend or wife) is left home and wishing that he didnt become that way. She hopes that she can forget him and move on with her life. Kind of sounds depressing, but it is true. There are some people like that-who will do whatever it takes to win a game or pass a test.

I had never heard of this band nor song before and surprisingly, I really liked it. I loved the beat and the rare sounds featured in this song! The lyrics were extremely powerful and I felt like I knew every little detail going on in the racer’s life. As the racer is “plotting the course,” he means he is figuring out what the best thing is to do, but in the meantime, he’s going to keep on driving on that speedway up to his highest potential. It almost seems like he’s unsure of what kind of choice to make, whether it be the woman or the race. “And thinking of someone for whom he still burns” leans toward the woman side of things, but yet he is still on the racetrack competing for the championship cup. This song seems to express the importance of decisions and how big of an impact they can cause or have an effect on.

I think this is kind of a strange song but at the same time I kind of liked it. The bat was really good and i really like the guitar in it too. I think that the meaning of this song is that the guy is trying to strive and work vigorously for something that he wants to win or accomplish, and he feels like nothing is going to stop him. There is just one little thing though. He can’t ever win, but he trys his best and things such as the girl in the song aren’t going to affect him. he will just leave everything else behind.

soooo yeah thats what I think.

And for everyone else… PLEASE LISTEN TO A FLOBOTS SONG OTHER THAN HANDLEBARS! PLEASE! Their originality blows my mind. Oh and yes I listened to a few other cake songs, and I see what you are talking about. I said what I said because all I had to base it off was the song you posted, but now I see they have a lot broader spectrum of music. I think the song was about a guy exceeding in sports and life maybe even when everyone else thinks they are done. He just keeps going and going and doing his best. It kept saying ’she’ so I’m guessing he had a wife that felt alone because he was out doing the sports and stuff. I think she felt that he would be normal like others but he won’t let anyone get in his way of reaching his goal.

Well, I don’t necessarily think his song is about a guy on an actual race-track of some sort. I think it is a symbol of how life is very competitive like a race. The guy singing the song is always doing his best and striving to be number one, yet someone “took the trophy” a long time ago. As for the woman mentioned a couple times: maybe he is in love with her, but she is with someone else and he keeps trying to win her over. I don’t know, but I think it is a possibility!

The part about the girl wanting the memories to go away tells us that he wants to be with her, but he’s too busy wanting to win something he’s already lost. The feelings of the song were passionate to me. It felt exciting, and I could feel that there was pain, sadness, and a need to win and get away from the past…even though it’s all over. I agree with 5 Dr.Carter 5… this was a “good song choice”. =)

i was not a fan of this song of the week. i thought it had nothing to it except words and a beat. i mean, i could do that with like harry potter and some bongos. i did like the lyrics though. i liked how it was about putting all you have into something and in the end having it not be worth it and all that. not that i am emo or all about sad depressing things. i just liked the meaning and how it says that not everything turns out okay so expect for the worst sort of thing.

Um…i really didn’t like this song. Just wasn’t feelin’ it. But i did like the lyrics. They were very cool, but the music and everything i didn’t like.

well i have actually always really liked this song i thought it was super catchy. Ithas interesting lyrics and for the longest time when i listened to it i couldnt really understand what they were talking about. Its much easier when you can read the lyrics as you listen. I think the message was interesting, makes you think because it doesnt go right out and say it like a lot of songs do. Awesome song!

I think the song was kinda nice. I mean I liked the rap, and I normally hate raps, but this one was cool. The guitar in the chorus was amazing. I liked the lyrics. It was basically saying that this guy is going the distance, despite all obstacles. It describes something is haunting him, but he still prevails through turmoil. Overall, I really liked the song.

wow, I haven’t heard this song in awhile. I honestly don’t think that Cake and Flobots sound that much the same, but I could be wrong. I agree will GirlsNotGrey about how you said that songs from Flobots are about political stuff, and this song obviously isn’t. It’s still a good song though. Also, I agree with others when they say that this song is about how even though everything is already over, they won’t stop being victorious. It makes plenty of sense, because even though we don’t really realize it, we all do that every once in awhile.

I just used a jockey/racer because the song is called “The Distance.” Just saying

OOOH and if people “agree” with me, please say why. Having a paragraph like

“I like this song. It is not the usual type of music I would normally listen to. I like getting in to older music lol. I agree with everything GirlsNotGrey(or any other of these students) said.”

That’s not cool that you will drastically shorten the length of the assignment yo. I’m not saying @thebestauntever6 is doing this. It’s just been on my mind for a while. It just isn’t fair

GirlsNotGrey(Cheer for the Speech Team yo)

And by the way, SHAUN OF THE DEAD IS ON!!!!! IT’S A GREAT MOVIEEEE

What I like about music is, while artists traditionally have a specific meaning and point they want to get across to their listener, songs have a certain ambiguity to it as to allow the listener to relate to a song any number of ways. In scrutinizing the lyrics and comments left by others, this song is obviously a car race metaphor used to tell the story of a guy trying to make it in the world, specifically trying to win back a girl who clearly doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore. “And thinking of someone for who he still burns”, and “she’s hoping in time her memory will fade.” In my honest opinion, I think the guy realizes the chick doesn’t want him, but he’s in denial. The verse “Assail him with monster truck force.” Followed by “in his mind he’s still driving, making the grade.” I think the fact he keeps racing and doesn’t quit is indicative of the reason the chick ended the relationship with him-in other words, his pride full ways and stubborness cost him “the cup”.

    By the way, I really want to learn the trumpet part of this song. (;

Never heard of Cake. Never heard of this song. This lyrics are great but the music itself isn’t all that. It sounds like something I’ve heard before. My favorite line was “He’s going for speed. She’s all alone in her time of need.” I like that. Taht was the biggest thing that stood out to me.

I agree with ninjastar5. The song its self was like someone just saying words with a beat and some music. I personally hated the song. the only thing i kind of liked was the message it gave. that not everything turns out ok.

Wow, this song is just so awesome. The guy refuses to loose, even though the award has already been given out and the race is over. He lives in the past and refuses to let go, even for the one is loves. She loves and misses him, too, and wishes she would forget all about him. She’s always in the back of his mind, but he has unyielding determination.
In a good-weird way, this song is like a mixture of inspiration and loss. It makes me want to want something as bad as the guy wants to win, the way they describe him going and going even after no one is even there to watch. He keeps going on for himself and himself only. It’s also a little sad, because he is so stuck in the past that he neglects someone that is important to him (that he still “burns” for).
The music is great! I liked those crazy guitar sounds.
The band is just all the more awesome for being environmentally friendly. ^_^

    Procrastinator5000,

    I didn’t even think of that! :P
haha, I just kind of figured that maybe he had two loves: the race and the girl. And that he was so determined about that race, that it usually came before the girl.
I really like your view of it, though. Maybe the race is all about the one he loves, or the race symbolizes the relationship he has with the one he loves.

This song of the week was pretty good. the lyrics were kind of cool. The lyrics were different to say the least, and they definitely sound like flobots. I sort of disagree with the expecting the worst meaning, but the song itself isn’t so bad,

    onnanoko6,
I COMPLETELY agree with you and like the way you stated your beliefs. It seems like she is sticking with him even though he seems to be outdoing his racing. However, he might not actually be outdoing everything; it might be his way of expressing of how high his standards are. This man seems to be striving for the ultimate destination whatever it may be, regardless if everyone else is done. I really liked the sound, especially the very beginning because it sounds like a voice you would hear at a starting line of a raceway.

I agree with you fully. This song created a high energy atmosphere for me. I tapped my foot for the entire song. Overall the song is a good choice. I enjoyed all of it. I could picture him trying to get to the person that “burned” him trying to get a little revenge.

    gator5-
I kind of see where you’re coming from when you say that you hated it and that it’s not ‘attractive’. You’re right, it’s not like the type of music everyone is used to hearing, but keep in mind that Cake is trying to sound unique. It sounds different because they do this type of music to put themselves out there for people to view thier music in a different way. They want you to understand the meaning of the song more so than just the beat or how it sounds because their lyrics can be powerful.

i took these lyrics to be talking about a race driver getting ready and running the race. i think it is referring to a guy who has his mind set on what he wants to do but a girl comes into his life and makes him make a choice.. her or the race.. and as he is running the race, he thinks of her being all alone and not having anyone. i had never heard of cake before this but they were pretty good!
