Use Your Allusions: An Extra Song of the Week.
Since we’ve just been doing allusions presentations all week long, I couldn’t think of an actual topic to relate to what we were doing. So, I decided that for your second post this week, I would post a song based on one of the allusions you learned and presented. Some of you were saying that no one ever uses any of the allusions I gave you. This song is proof otherwise. This song is from the genre of southern rock. It’s by a band called Corrosion of Conformity and the title is “Albatross”.
It was either this or Maiden’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, but since we had already had Maiden and since that song is 14 minutes long (but 14 minutes of awesomeness!) I chose this one. When discussing the song, be sure to use what you learned about the meaning of albatross in our study of allusions. Also, please avoid the “I like this song better” or “I like the other song better” posts that we got during Beatles’ week. It’s not a competition. It’s two totally different songs with two totally different purposes for writing about them. Enjoy. The guitar solo near the end is particularly nice. This is a live version because I forgot to load the original on my computer before posting.
Listen here:
07 Albatross
“Albatross”
Corrosion of Conformity
Well I’m feelin’ left behind what a waste of time
They’re coming to get you, run on
How can I respect your crime
When all you criminals whine
They bought and sold you, run on, run on
You can call me crazy
You can call me wrong
Cause I was born a liar
Albatross fly on, fly on
My home is kind, man it pays to be blind
I promise to forget you run on
No swallowed pride, no conspiracy lined
Broken promise of the virtue, run on, run on
You can call me lazy
But I know where I belong
Cause I was born a liar
Albatross, fly on, fly on
With your trust in love from your God above…
I believe the Albatross is me
You can call me lazy
You can call me wrong
Cause I was born a liar
Albatross, fly on, fly on
I should have seen the signs
Now the memories far behind
It was no big loss,
Fly on, Albatross yeah

I do like how the song is all about one of our allusions. It makes you really remember if it’s put into a creative form. As for the song I thought it was okay, but I liked the lyrics better. Usually when someone says albatross they mean someone else or something but he kind of sounded like he was talking about himself. I think people can relate when they think about the stupid things they do or maybe something that would be bothersome. This song is kind of a good song to make you look around you and make you look at yourself.

I like the way this song has a allusion in it, as you said. it really is a good way to help you memorize what exactly the allusion means in a creative way and will do great for studying for the test. however i did not like the song.
This was a really awesome song….I liked it =)
I also liked how it helped me with that allusion
But, yeah, I liked it a lot. I agree with onnanako6, it sounded like he was talking about himself. People do dumb things, and this song makes you wonder what you did, and how it hurt other people. Or, that’s what it makes me think about. Seriously though, I liked the song. This one also had a good message behind it =) GOOD CHOICE MR. HUDSON!!
<3,

I agree with onnanoko6. Its cool that you put a song that has to do with class. i think it makes the blog more..helpful. i think some of the blogs should be about class stuff just so we get some class information some of the time I also agree wwhen he/she said that they dont like the song but the lyrics were good.

I also liked that the song was about an allusion, but it was still creative. I liked the lyrics. It was interesting to see how the person was talking about himself as an albatross. Like you said, it was cool that he thought he was the albatross, not someone or something else.
In response to onnanoko6:
Yeah, i like how tchrman was able to incorporate an allusion into the song of the week. And i like the more distorted sound that most of the songs of the week lack. Its better to rock out to, yo. I’ve never heard of the band though, so im going to go look them up on youtube later to see if they have any other good songs.:)
Well, I’m not to sure what this song is really about. I think its about a guy who’s done sometime bad but when he says to “fly on” or “run on” it means he has to move on from what he has done. I liked this song though. THe intro was great!

So, I am hoping that I understand this allusion as well as the song. I believe albatross is someone or something that is a heavy burden on a person. So, it seems to me that the writer is talking about someone he knows that did “a crime” and is an albatross to him. However, the writer doesn’t want to deal with it anymore and is telling the person to go on with their life(fly on albatross fly on). He doesn’t really regret telling them goodbye either. I could be way off on this but this is what I understood it to mean.

I like what you said in your post. This song kind of made me think about when something not great has happened to you and you didn’t realize it then, but the signs were crystal clear. And once the song was over, what you said about making you look at yourself also seemed like a legit meaning.

This song is one that if I were angry or upset at someone or something for making me feel like crap, I would listen to. It was depressing because not only does he feel like he’s the burden but he also feels that he is a waste of time and sort of worthless. That is the message I got from it at least. I know this would be a song I chose if I wanted to wallow in my own self pity.

I definately feel like a cool kid when I hear or read allusions and know what they mean. (:
He’s an albatross.
He’s a liar, he’s lazy, he’s crazy, and he’s wrong, but atleast he knows where he belongs.
He wants to fly on, instead of being shot down, cursing everything around him. He doesn’t want to be a burden to anything or anyone; he just wants to be free from his memories, so he can move forward, without harboring any regrets or grudges.
onnanoko6,
You’re right. The music isn’t really anything special. To me, it was all about the music. I understood it. It meant something to me.
-GummyWormCasserole6…..
I agree with onnanoko6 that it is cool to hear a song written about something we learned in class. It helps put two and two together. As with the last song, I enjoyed the lyrics more than the actual song. I think the message was that you sometimes have to deal with guilt/burden but you have to keep on trudging through life despite them. They can sometimes even help make you a better person.
whywas6afraidof7?
OH sorry!!!
I meant, *it was all about the lyrics (not the music)
-GummyWormCasserole
this song, in my mind, was pointless and stupid. i hated the lyrics and i dont think the bands talent(if they even had any) showed up in this song… sorry tchrman.

This song is really cool. Teh meeningz iz vury gewd. I don’t like the singer… if John Cooper from Skillet sang this it would be 2398754 times more amazing. this singer does not really get the point across to me. The guitar parts and solos and all that were great! but, it felt to me like it was a song that was made to be sold, not made for a reason. I guess i’m trying to find a drawn out way to say that this song lacked the passion you get from live bands like Skillet, who I will be seeing live on Thursday!! (just throwing that out there)

more allusions!! i like the lyrics to this..i think he is saying be what you want to be and dont let anybody tell you wrong..mow learning the allusions i do see more of them and hear more too.. i dont feel so lost when someone sayd big brother is watching, i actually know what they mean
i think the guy is saying that he doesnt care on what u call him because only knows who he is
the lyrics were cool. i did not like the music or his voice, but i did like the lyrics. i will actually remember what albatross means now (of course i had to look it up) but now that i know ill be able to remember. and im sure whoever said that will be hearing these allusions everywhere now! its just like a vocab word or some book. ever since we read great expectations last year i have heard things about it everywhere and finally understood what they were talking about. i am willing to bet money that these allusions are exactly the same. this song is just an example.

your right! it is really cool that he is actually talking about himself. i dont think i would have thought about an albatross that way, but now that its put in my head….
i think we all have some things about ourselves that we consider a burden. whether its the fact that we push peole away or were “too pretty” haha (i hate those type of people) but anyways.
we all have that quirk that we hate about our selves and it can be considered an albatross just as easily as someone or something else. Thanks for giving me that perspective.

I really liked the song albatross. It is cool that it is one of our allusions. The guitar part was rockin at the beginning and I loved the drums. I think that the song is saying that although you call me lazy and crazy, I still have the spirit and adasity in me to accomplish anything. Overall, it was a really good song.
well imma have to learn this song. its in my vocal range and also in my style of music. i may have to throw in a little bit of a faster twist on the solo’s but yeah. oi like this song’s message. it’s saying that you can say what you like, cuz i really don’t give a crap. powerful.
im going to go on youtube later as well,blink1826. the distorted sound is a nice thing to me. i can dig it. i’ve never heard of this band either. maybe a lil bit but not much at all. and at times the singer sounds like Glenn Danzig (singer of the Misfits and Danzig) not a bad thing
